01What a cookie actually is

A cookie is a small text file a site asks your browser to keep. On the next request the browser sends it back, which is how a website recognises that it is still you — the same session, the same language, the same accepted banner.

The same rules apply to local storage, which this site uses for the language preference. It is not technically a cookie, but it stores data on your device, so it belongs on this page.

02Consent, and what happens without it

Necessary cookies are set as soon as you use the site: they carry no analytics and identify nobody, and the site cannot honour a language choice without them. Under the ePrivacy Directive they do not require consent.

The analytics cookie is set only after you press Accept in the banner. Press Decline and Google Analytics is never loaded — no script, no request, no cookie. The site behaves identically; I simply learn less about which articles are worth writing.

03What the analytics actually measures

Page views, approximate country and city from the IP address, referring source, device type, and how far down an article people read. IP addresses are truncated by Google before storage and are not visible to me.

I do not use Google Signals, cross-device tracking, advertising features or audience export. Analytics data is retained for 14 months and then deleted automatically.

04Third-party content

Fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives the request and your IP address but sets no cookies. Video is served from this domain, not from an embedded player, so there is no YouTube or Vimeo tracking.

Links to LinkedIn open on their site, where their own cookie rules apply. Nothing about you is sent to them from here.

05Controlling cookies in your browser

Every browser lets you see stored cookies, delete them, and block them per site — usually under Settings → Privacy. You can also browse in a private window, where everything is discarded when you close it.

Blocking all cookies will not break this site. You will simply be asked for your language again on every visit.

06Global Privacy Control and Do Not Track

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, it is treated as a refusal of analytics and the banner defaults to declined. The older Do Not Track header is honoured in the same way, even though it has no legal standing.

You never have to press anything to opt out if your browser already speaks for you.

07Changes to this policy

If a new tool is added — a heat map, a support widget, an embedded video player — this page and the list above are updated before it goes live, and the date at the top changes with it.
